Should BJP MLAs Prioritize Their Constituencies Over Kolkata?

Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Dec 23 (NationPress) On Tuesday, Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, urged BJP legislators to dedicate their efforts exclusively to their respective Assembly constituencies starting from the New Year, which begins next week.
He emphasized that if any party legislator from the districts must visit Kolkata for official duties, they should aim to arrive in the state capital in the morning and return to their constituencies the same evening after wrapping up their tasks.
“He has instructed that in cases where a party legislator from the district needs to come to Kolkata for any reason, they should endeavor to reach in the morning and head back to their constituencies by the evening after completing their work in the capital,” shared a party legislator.
Adhikari visited the Assembly on Tuesday afternoon and engaged with BJP legislators present at the site. During this interaction, he reiterated that legislators should fully concentrate on their respective constituencies rather than spending excessive time in Kolkata.
The Leader of the Opposition also provided insights on the protocol to be followed during the upcoming winter session of the Assembly, which is set for January, followed by the interim Budget session in February.
“For legislators representing Assembly constituencies that are within daily commuting distance from Kolkata, they should arrive in the morning, attend the session, and then return to their constituencies in the evening. Exceptions should only apply to those from distant constituencies, particularly in North Bengal, where daily commutes are impractical,” a BJP legislator mentioned, quoting Adhikari.
Another BJP legislator underscored Adhikari’s personal example in this context.
“Despite his hectic schedule as the Leader of the Opposition, necessitating travel across the state and leadership during Assembly sessions, he does not overlook his own constituency in Nandigram, located in East Midnapore district. He consistently finds time amidst his demanding agenda to engage with the residents of Nandigram. His time management skills are admirable and should be emulated,” the legislator remarked.
Currently, the BJP holds 65 seats in the West Bengal Assembly. In the 2021 Assembly elections, Adhikari was elected from the Nandigram constituency, defeating the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, by a narrow margin of fewer than 2,000 votes.
Subsequently, Mamata Banerjee secured victory in the by-election for the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency in south Kolkata and continued her tenure as Chief Minister for a third consecutive term.
