Guwahati, Feb 21 (NationPress) Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Saturday that the BJP is preparing to contest the two Rajya Sabha seats that are currently vacant and scheduled for elections on March 16. Additionally, strategies are being developed for the third vacant seat.
Sarma confirmed that the BJP has already determined its candidates for the two Rajya Sabha positions and is in the process of finalizing the nominees.
He further stated that the BJP will closely observe the tactics employed by opposition parties before making a decision regarding the third vacant seat.
“The BJP will devise a strategy for the third vacant seat as well, but the final decision will be contingent upon the opposition's approach,” the Chief Minister remarked.
Sarma also revealed that a panel featuring three candidates will be curated by the BJP’s state unit and submitted to the central leadership based in New Delhi for approval.
The process of narrowing down potential candidates is currently in motion within the party.
According to Sarma, Dilip Saikia, the state BJP president, will formally present the list of shortlisted candidates to the central leadership for its evaluation and final approval.
“Following party norms, the state unit will propose a list of potential candidates, with the central leadership making the ultimate decision,” Sarma stated.
The Chief Minister expressed confidence in the BJP's strength in the Assam Legislative Assembly, which significantly influences the Rajya Sabha elections.
He emphasized that the party would approach the elections in a well-planned and methodical manner, considering both organizational interests and the overarching political landscape in the state.
The elections for the Rajya Sabha seats in Assam are set for March 16.
Political activities have ramped up recently, with both the ruling BJP and opposition factions engaging in extensive internal discussions and consultations in anticipation of the elections.
Given the BJP-led alliance's substantial majority in the Assembly, the ruling party is expected to secure the two seats, while the competition for the remaining seat will likely hinge on the unity and strategy of the opposition.
