Canadian MP Chandra Arya warns of potential revival of motion to classify 1984 riots as genocide by Khalistan supporters

Toronto (Canada), Dec 7 (NationPress) Chandra Arya, a Member of Parliament (MP) in Canada, has firmly articulated his position against a motion that seeks to classify the 1984 anti-Sikh riots as genocide. He cautioned that the politically influential Khalistani lobby is likely to try to advance this motion once more.
Arya noted that he was the sole MP in the House of Commons opposing the motion, effectively preventing its passage.
The Canadian MP brought attention to the ongoing threats and pressures he endures for expressing the concerns of the Hindu-Canadian community, reiterating that the politically influential Khalistani lobby may attempt to push the motion again.
In a post shared on X, Arya stated, "Today, the MP from Surrey-Newton sought to have Parliament recognize the 1984 riots in India against Sikhs as genocide. He requested unanimous consent from all Members in the House of Commons to pass his motion. I was the only Member present to say NO, and my single objection was sufficient to prevent this motion from being approved."
He added, "Right after this, I faced threats within the Parliament building for my stand against the motion. Numerous efforts, both inside and outside Parliament, have been made to silence my voice regarding the Hindu-Canadian community's concerns. While I take pride in having thwarted this divisive agenda today, we must remain vigilant. Next time, we may not be so fortunate."
Arya further asserted that the Khalistan supporters might attempt to reintroduce the motion.
"The politically influential Khalistani lobby will undoubtedly try again to push Parliament to categorize the 1984 riots as genocide. There is no assurance that I will be present in the House to obstruct it next time if any other Member from any political party tries to bring this motion forward," Arya stated.
He urged Hindu-Canadians to actively engage with their MPs to ensure the motion is thwarted in the future.
"I call upon all Hindu-Canadians to act immediately. Contact your local MPs and obtain their commitment to oppose this motion whenever it arises. The 1984 anti-Sikh riots in India, which occurred following the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards, were undeniably barbaric," the Canadian MP remarked.
Arya condemned the loss of lives during the riots but stressed that labeling these riots as genocide would be misleading and unjustified.
He explained, "Thousands of innocent Sikhs lost their lives in those tragic events, and we all unequivocally denounce this brutality. However, branding these tragic and dreadful riots as genocide is misleading and unjustified."
He continued, "Such claims fuel the agenda of anti-Hindu elements and threaten to create a rift between the Hindu and Sikh communities in Canada. We cannot allow these divisive forces to disrupt harmony. The only way to prevent Canada's Parliament from declaring the 1984 riots as genocide is to ensure that every MP, or at least a significant number of them, stands up and says NO when unanimous consent is requested."
Reiterating his support for protecting the Hindu community, Arya stated, "Once again, I urge Hindu-Canadians to reach out to your MPs and firmly advocate for their opposition to this Khalistani-driven narrative. Let us unite against this anti-Hindu agenda and protect our communities."
