CBI Investigates Three Individuals Over Illegal Drug Manufacturing in Puducherry
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 3 (NationPress) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has initiated an inquiry into the illicit drug manufacturing activities involving at least two firms in Puducherry, following authorization from the Union Home Ministry, as reported by an official source.
The federal investigative agency has registered an FIR against three individuals: Vivek Venkatesan of Amman Pharma in Puducherry; Raja from Puducherry; and A.K. Rana of Meenakshi Pharma in Puducherry, based on the Puducherry government's recommendation to take charge of the matter.
CBI Superintendent of Police Anil Kumar Yadav has directed the filing of the FIR under various legal provisions addressing criminal conspiracy, drug adulteration, fraud, unlawful drug manufacturing, distribution, and dealing in counterfeit drugs.
The CBI took over the investigation at the request of the home department of the Puducherry government.
The FIR states, “... the investigation of Cr. No 27/2025, PS-CBCID, Puducherry, has been reassigned to CBI as Case RC-2182026A0003.”
Previously, on December 12, 2025, the Under Secretary (Vigilance) of the Puducherry government communicated the Lieutenant Governor's approval for a CBI investigation into all criminal cases related to illegal drug manufacturing, storage, distribution, and similar offenses uncovered in the Mettupalayam and Sedarapet regions of the Union Territory, including associated FIRs.
In a letter dated December 31, 2025, the Special Secretary (Home) of Puducherry urged the CBI Director to assume control of the investigation, as per the official.
On February 24, the Under Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, communicated the Ministry’s 'No Objection' for the CBI to take over the investigation.
In advocating for a CBI inquiry, the Puducherry government highlighted that numerous arrests and the confiscation of incriminating evidence indicate potential inter-State implications, intricate supply chains, financial transactions, and the involvement of various individuals across multiple states, suggesting organized criminal networks engaged in illegal drug manufacturing and distribution.
The Puducherry government justified the recommendation for a CBI investigation, stating, “The findings suggest the possibility of illicit financial activities and organized operations that could adversely affect public health, economic stability, and national interests, with connections potentially extending beyond Puducherry's jurisdiction.”
“The Crime Branch of Puducherry Police has conducted a commendable investigation up to this point. However, it is believed that further inquiry may require specialized multi-disciplinary expertise, inter-State collaboration, financial investigative skills, and possibly international liaison capabilities that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) can provide, given its national reach,” noted the communication sent to the CBI Director.
