Challenges for Security Forces in Odisha: Maoist Activity and Drug Trafficking

Bhubaneswar, Nov 30 (NationPress) The existence of Left-Wing Extremists in the thick forests of Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Boudh, along with the Maoist-associated narcotics trafficking, remains a substantial obstacle for the security forces in Odisha, stated a high-ranking official on Saturday.
In a briefing with reporters, CD Aggarwal, IG Frontier Headquarters BSF (Special Ops) Odisha, remarked: "According to the most recent classification by the Ministry of Home Affairs, 38 districts across the nation have been identified as Naxal-affected. Among these, seven districts in Odisha are impacted by Left Wing Extremism. Current estimates indicate that approximately 60 to 70 red ultras are operational in Odisha, with seven to eight originating from the state itself."
He elaborated that the Maoists from the Odisha region primarily act as general members, while the leadership often comes from cadres in Andhra Pradesh. He noted that similar patterns exist in Chhattisgarh, where Maoist groups are predominantly led by Andhra Pradesh cadres.
Discussing the successes achieved in tackling Maoist activities, Agarwal highlighted that the districts of Koraput and Malkangiri, once heavily influenced by LWE, are now nearly free from its impact. Since the BSF was deployed in 2010, around 250-300 Maoists have been neutralized in Odisha over the last 10-15 years.
Regarding the security dilemmas along the border with Bangladesh, Aggarwal pointed out the intricate challenges posed by cultural and linguistic similarities between the populations on both sides. Nevertheless, he reassured that the BSF has been vigilant and has effectively managed any cross-border threats.
A press release from the BSF on Saturday mentioned that three notorious Maoists have been neutralized, and 24 hardcore cadres have surrendered in the state over the past year.
During operations against Maoists in Odisha last year, BSF personnel seized 34 IEDs, 117 grenades, and a significant stockpile of arms and ammunition.
The sacrifices made by 14 BSF officers and personnel during their fight against Maoists in Odisha since 2010 were also commemorated during the 60th Raising Day celebrations of the BSF.
"The BSF is dedicated to eliminating Naxalism from Odisha by March 2026, in line with the vision outlined by Union Home Minister Amit Shah," the BSF press release stated.
