Chemical Tanker Catches Fire on Rajasthan's Nagaur Highway; Driver Escapes Just in Time
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jaipur, March 5 (NationPress) An atmosphere of alarm erupted late Wednesday night when a tanker carrying chemicals overturned and ignited on the Nagaur-Ladnun segment of National Highway 458 in Rajasthan. The fire was so fierce that the flames and dense smoke could be spotted from nearly two kilometers away.
In response, highway authorities swiftly closed the road in both directions to avert any additional incidents. The event took place close to the Kunjal Mata Temple.
According to law enforcement, the tanker lost control during a turn, flipped over, and subsequently erupted in flames.
The driver, identified as Lukman Khan from Barmer district, narrowly escaped by shattering the cabin glass and leaping out just moments before the fire spread.
Station House Officer Suman Chaudhary of Surpalia police station reported that the tanker caught fire almost instantly after its overturning, leading to a chaotic scene on the highway. Vehicles were halted from both directions, resulting in long queues as a precautionary measure.
Upon being informed of the situation, fire engines from the Nagaur Municipal Council and surrounding areas rushed to the location. A total of four fire tenders were deployed to control the raging inferno.
Given the tanker’s chemical load and the fire's intensity, nearly two hours of continuous firefighting efforts were required to extinguish the flames. Six ambulances were also positioned at the scene as a safety measure. Authorities indicated that the tanker was transporting approximately 30 tonnes of Amike chemical from Gandhidham in Gujarat to Sonipat in Haryana.
Reports suggest that the driver lost control while attempting to avoid a trailer that unexpectedly appeared during an overtaking maneuver. Fortunately, no other vehicles were nearby at the time, which prevented a potentially catastrophic situation.
The tanker was completely consumed by the fire, leaving only debris in its wake. The towering flames and thick smoke drew attention from nearby villages. After the fire was under control and extinguished, traffic on the highway was progressively restored.
