Did a Class 1 student lose parts of her fingers in a school door accident in Karnataka?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Tumakuru, Feb 13 (NationPress) In a disturbing incident, a Class 1 student suffered the loss of parts of her two fingers due to a door accident in Guluru town, located in Karnataka's Tumakuru district.
After parents raised concerns over potential negligence from the school staff, state Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa announced he would request a report and pursue legal action against anyone found responsible.
Initial reports indicate that the incident occurred while the student, Chinmayi Devi, was waiting in line during the distribution of the midday meal.
While standing, she placed her hand on the edge of a door, which was reportedly pushed open forcefully, leading to the amputation of parts of two of her fingers. The parents claimed that after the injury, the teachers merely rinsed her hand with water and sent her home.
One finger was severed at the tip, while the other sustained more serious damage and was nearly completely cut off.
The parents also contended that the Block Education Officer (BEO) failed to address the situation when they brought it to his attention. A case has since been filed against the BEO in Tumakuru on allegations of negligence.
In response to the incident, BEO Hanumantappa stated that the teachers had promptly transported the student to a private hospital for medical care.
"I was not there when the incident took place. I visited the school afterward and spoke with the child's parents and the child herself. As no response was provided by the headmaster, I have submitted a report to the Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI),” he explained.
He added that the parents had inquired about the teachers' accountability. "A notice has been served to the headmaster and those involved. The child is recovering well, aside from some pain. This incident should not have occurred. It is my responsibility, and I will ensure follow-up actions are taken," he asserted.
Minister Bangarappa also commented on the situation from Bengaluru on Friday.
"The teachers failed to inform the parents, which they were obligated to do. I am requesting a report to identify who is at fault. Such incidents are unacceptable. Should the teachers have been negligent, we will take strict action without hesitation," he stated.
"Once children arrive at school, we must guarantee their safety. It's the duty of our teachers and the department to ensure that students who come to school return home safely. I will initiate legal measures as per the law and issue instructions to prevent such occurrences in the future," he added.
