Is CM Banerjee Ready to Challenge SIR in Court?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 28 (NationPress) Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee escalated her criticism of the BJP and the Election Commission regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, alleging a covert scheme to introduce the National Register of Citizens (NRC) under the pretense of SIR. She demanded accountability from the Centre and cautioned that she might take legal action as a private citizen if required.
She asserted that approximately 140 individuals have been impacted by this alleged conspiracy.
"If you strip away the voting rights of the people, I will not stand idly by. If necessary, I will approach the court to advocate for the people's rights, not as a lawyer but as an ordinary citizen. I possess all the relevant documents and evidence related to SIR. They have misrepresented living individuals as deceased in the electoral rolls," CM Banerjee stated during a public gathering in Hooghly's Singur.
In her remarks, CM Banerjee also criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. "They visit Singur and claim, 'I will do this for Bengal,' while merely reading from a teleprompter. For the past four years, they have not allocated funds for housing projects in Bengal, nor for road construction," she noted.
"This is not a personal attack. I pose a question to the Home Minister: what title does your wife hold? Women in Bengal marry and adopt their in-laws' surnames. Does this mean they will come under scrutiny? You can imprison or shoot me; I remain unfazed. If you imprison me, the mothers and sisters will respond. The farmers will respond," CM Banerjee asserted.
The Chief Minister declared her fondness for Singur and emphasized the coexistence of industry and agriculture. "Singur holds a special place in my heart; I have invested considerable time in this region. I pledged to return the farmers' land, and I have fulfilled that promise. The soil of Singur has been pivotal in my success," she expressed.
Additionally, CM Banerjee revealed plans for an 'agro-industrial park' to be established on 8 acres in Singur, highlighting the synergy between agriculture and industry. "Online retailers like Amazon and Flipkart are constructing substantial warehouses in Singur. A private industrial park will also be developed on 77 acres," she announced.
In a related development, while commemorating the victims of the Anandapur warehouses fire, CM Banerjee pledged employment opportunities for the families of the deceased.
"Recently, several of our associates lost their lives while employed at a private firm. I dispatched Bobby and Aroop there. We are providing Rs 10 lakh each as compensation to the victims' families. The Momo company and the decorators' firm are contributing Rs 5 lakh each. I have directed the police to ensure one family member of each deceased receives a job as a civic volunteer," CM Banerjee concluded.
