Key Takeaways
Coimbatore, March 29 (NationPress) The Coimbatore Police have initiated an investigation after a private bus originating from the city was confiscated in Chikkamagaluru district, Karnataka, for allegedly featuring slogans that seem to praise the notorious fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim.
The bus, which was transporting over 40 engineering students back from a trip to Dandeli in Karnataka's Uttara Kannada district, was stopped by the Basavanahalli police last Saturday.
Authorities reported that the bus attracted scrutiny due to certain phrases displayed on it, including terms like “gangs of Mumbai” and “real don”, which were interpreted as laudatory references to Dawood Ibrahim.
The Karnataka Police seized the bus and filed charges against both the driver and the vehicle owner. The case was registered under Section 197(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which addresses actions deemed detrimental to India's sovereignty, unity, and integrity.
According to police sources, the students aboard were not detained and were instead allowed to continue their journey in a different vehicle provided after the bus was taken into custody.
Officials indicated that the investigation will focus on understanding the context of the slogans, how they were applied to the bus, and if there was any intentional effort to promote illegal content.
In Tamil Nadu, the Coimbatore Police have commenced a separate inquiry into the matter. This investigation aims to clarify whether the display of the slogans was premeditated, who authorized them, and if the transport operator had any foreknowledge of the content that appeared on the vehicle.
A senior police official stated that while the primary investigation is being conducted by Karnataka authorities, the Coimbatore Police are also looking into the operational background of the bus and the conditions under which it was utilized for the student trip.
Officials urged travel operators and private vehicle owners to remain vigilant and to ensure that no unlawful, provocative, or inappropriate content is showcased on their vehicles.
This incident has raised concerns regarding the oversight of branding and decoration on private buses used for student excursions. Authorities are expected to conduct further inquiries involving individuals connected to the vehicle as part of the ongoing investigation.
