New Delhi, April 14 (NationPress) Congress National Spokesperson Pawan Khera, on Monday while addressing the media during the 'Save Constitution' rally in Amritsar, expressed grave concerns regarding the deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab.
During the celebration of Dr B.R. Ambedkar’s 135th birth anniversary, Khera cautioned that the safety of both police personnel and the public is at risk, urging the state government to take accountability.
"In Punjab, even police officers are not safe, facing attacks with grenades. The situation is extremely troubling," Khera stated, alluding to recent events that have raised security alarms in the state.
Khera attended the Congress rally in Amritsar to commemorate Ambedkar Jayanti and to underscore the necessity of defending the Constitution.
Accompanied by senior party leaders, he paid homage to Dr Ambedkar’s statue and highlighted the lasting significance of his vision.
"When the Constitution is under threat, our rights are also endangered. Protecting the Constitution is vital for safeguarding our rights," he remarked, noting that both the central and state governments are neglecting their responsibilities.
Referencing comments from Punjab Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa, Khera mentioned, "I haven't had an extensive discussion with Bajwa ji, but the government must fully assume responsibility to ensure the safety of every citizen and police officer in Punjab."
Criticizing Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Khera asserted, "There should be no political maneuvering when it comes to national and state security. Bhagwant Mann must take responsibility. Those engaged in trivial politics cannot effectively govern."
He dismissed the notion that filing FIRs would mask the state’s shortcomings. "Registering cases won't conceal the underlying problems. The reality of the situation is evident to all. Punjab is on the right track, but there are schemes to derail it," he warned.
Earlier on Sunday, the Punjab Police interrogated Leader of the Opposition and senior Congress figure, Partap Singh Bajwa, urging him to disclose his sources after he claimed in a TV interview that 50 hand grenades had entered the state, of which 18 had been deployed and 32 remained unaccounted for.
The Punjab Police's counter-Intelligence unit visited Bajwa's residence in Chandigarh to question him regarding his allegations.
