Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ahmedabad, April 3 (NationPress) The Congress party has officially announced Bhrugurajsinh Chauhan as its candidate for the upcoming Gujarat Assembly by-election representing the Umreth constituency.
According to a party statement, the nomination has received the endorsement of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.
Chauhan possesses extensive experience within the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC), having held numerous organizational roles.
Since 2025, he has been the Coordinator for the GPCC Central Zone and previously served as Pradesh Pratinidhi from 2020 to 2025.
Furthermore, Chauhan has been designated as PCC in-charge for the Nadiad, Mahudha, Thasra, and Galteshwar constituencies in preparation for the 2026 elections.
His previous roles include overseeing the PCC during the Morva Hadaf by-election in 2020 and the Karjan by-election in 2019.
At the grassroots level, Chauhan has served as President of the Umreth Taluka Panchayat for three consecutive terms from 2000 to 2015.
Additionally, he has held significant positions such as President of the Mahi Katha Vikas Munch in Anand, Secretary of the Akhil Gujarat Kshatriya Munch, and Chairman of the Ahima Seva Sahkari Mandali.
In anticipation of the upcoming by-election, the party has appointed four observers to ensure effective campaign coordination, organizational readiness, and to gather on-ground feedback.
These observers are expected to collaborate closely with local party units and monitor activities at the booth level.
According to party insiders, this strategy aims to strengthen coordination and ensure that campaign efforts are consistent with the party's broader electoral strategy in the area.
The Umreth Assembly seat, located in Anand district, became vacant following the passing of the incumbent BJP MLA Govind Parmar on March 6, thus necessitating the by-election.
The Election Commission has set polling for April 23, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 4.
The BJP has nominated Harshad Parmar as its candidate. He is the son of the late MLA and currently serves as the sarpanch of Chikhodra Gram Panchayat and president of the Anand Taluka Sarpanch Association.
