New Delhi, June 3 (NationPress) The Anti Auto Theft Squad (AATS/SED) of Delhi's South East District successfully captured a notorious criminal named Asif after a dramatic exchange of gunfire on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway.
This habitual offender had previously attacked a police constable and was wanted for numerous serious crimes, including attempted murder and vehicle theft.
The confrontation stemmed from an investigation into an incident that occurred on the night of May 27, 2025.
As per a statement from the Delhi Police, "HC Pawan and HC Karan were patrolling JD Musafir Marg when they spotted two suspicious individuals on a motorcycle. As they approached, one suspect fled, leaving the bike behind, while HC Karan managed to apprehend the other. However, the apprehended suspect suddenly pulled out a knife and injured HC Karan on his wrist, enabling his escape."
The motorcycle, registered as DL3SEA2456, was later confirmed as stolen from a separate case filed at PP Pur.
An FIR (No. 225/25) was lodged at Police Station NFC, and subsequent analysis of CCTV footage led to identifying the suspects, Raja and Asif. Raja was arrested on May 30, and during questioning, he admitted to committing the crime alongside Asif.
The capture of Asif took place on Monday after a meticulously planned operation led by Inspector Pramod Chauhan.
"When Asif was instructed to halt, he attempted to escape and fired three shots from his weapon at the police officers. In self-defense, ASI Sharwan of AATS/SED returned fire, injuring Asif in the right leg," the statement elaborated.
Asif, who was riding yet another stolen motorcycle (DL3SEP9673), was arrested and transported to AIIMS Hospital for medical attention. This motorcycle was linked to E-FIR No. 14895/25 of PS Lajpat Nagar.
Police sources disclosed that Asif, 24 years old and residing on Tanki Road, Jaitpur, is a habitual drug user with an extensive criminal record.
"His past criminal activities include nine cases related to robbery, snatching, auto theft, and violations of the Arms Act," the release stated. Notably, he had only recently secured bail on May 14, 2025.
A new case concerning the shootout is being filed at PS Jaitpur. Investigations are still ongoing, and police suspect his involvement in various other crimes across the city.
