Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 30 (NationPress) The Home Department of Kerala has suspended Vadakara Deputy SP Umesh following serious allegations of sexual exploitation revealed in a 32-page suicide note authored by Inspector Binu Thomas (52), the Station House Officer at Cherpulassery Police Station in Palakkad.
The government took this action a day after State Police Chief Ravada A. Chandrasekhar submitted a detailed report to the Home Department, outlining Umesh's “immoral, illegal, and undisciplined actions”, which led to the immediate suspension.
The allegations trace back to April 24, 2014, when Binu, then a Sub-Inspector and SHO of Wadakkanchery Police Station, led a raid resulting in the detention of a woman and four men on immoral trafficking charges.
At that time, Umesh, who was the Circle Inspector, allegedly accepted bribes from those detained and ensured that no formal case was registered.
That same night, Umesh and Binu reportedly visited the woman’s home, where she was allegedly threatened and sexually exploited.
Binu’s suicide note attributes primary blame to Umesh, claiming that the DySP sexually assaulted the woman that night and again two days later.
Binu also admitted to developing a relationship with the woman after extensive phone conversations, acknowledging in the note that such a relationship was inherently exploitative due to the power dynamics involved.
Palakkad District Police Chief Ajit Kumar, who recorded the woman's latest statement, mentioned that a “strong report” has been forwarded to police headquarters.
Sources revealed that the woman, currently living in a southern district, corroborated the incidents outlined in the suicide note and indicated that Umesh’s alleged misconduct was even broader than described.
Initially, when Binu was discovered deceased in the police quarters, his death was attributed to personal issues. Although police recovered his suicide note and phones during the inquest, the contents were not made public for nearly two weeks.
The investigation gained momentum only after three pages of the note were leaked to the media.
According to sources, Umesh had expressed discontent regarding Binu's emotional involvement with the woman and even informed Binu’s wife, a schoolteacher, exacerbating the officer’s distress.
Binu took the drastic action on November 15.
Following the leak, a preliminary disciplinary inquiry was initiated against Umesh. Ajit Kumar noted that the suspended DySP would now undergo an oral inquiry, after which further action will be determined.
He refrained from commenting on whether the suicide note implicates Umesh in abetment of suicide, given that the District Crime Branch is conducting an ongoing investigation.
Currently, no criminal charges have been filed against Umesh for sexual assault or abetment of suicide. However, senior officials indicated that the government is likely to soon grant sanctions to initiate criminal proceedings against the suspended DySP.
