Agartala, Oct 24 (NationPress) Tripura's Chief Minister Manik Saha declared on Friday that individuals implicated in the violent incidents that occurred in the Kamalpur subdivision of Dhalai district will face consequences, stating that those responsible "will be nowhere in the coming days".

In response to the violence allegedly instigated by the tribal-focused Tiprasa Civil Society (TCS), Saha ordered law enforcement to take decisive measures against the offenders.

During his visit to Govind Ballabh Pant Medical College and Hospital in Agartala, the Chief Minister assessed the condition of three individuals injured in the attacks — Salema Block Development Officer (BDO) Abhijit Majumdar, Engineer Animesh Saha, and trader Subrata Paul.

Of the twelve injured from Thursday's violence, three were transferred to Agartala for medical care, while the remaining nine, including Kamalpur Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Samudra Debbarma, are being treated at Kamalpur Bimal Sinha Memorial Hospital.

“I monitored the situation throughout the night and have given appropriate orders to the police,” CM Saha stated during a media address.

Expressing his anger, he remarked: “This behavior is intolerable. The assault involved sticks, iron rods, and slingshots — they even snatched chains from women. I question the nature of this protest. I have instructed Tripura Police to act decisively, and justice will be served.”

Reiterating his commitment, Saha affirmed that all involved would face justice. “We have deployed significant security forces. I have identified individuals on social media. There will be no tolerance for this behavior. They will be nowhere in the coming days. Wait and see,” he cautioned.

In a Facebook update, Saha stated: “The District Magistrate of Dhalai has been tasked with evaluating the damages to shops that were vandalized in Santirbazar under the Surma Assembly Constituency. The government stands with the victims and will ensure their rehabilitation.”

Political figures from various parties condemned the violence in Kamalpur.

Former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar alleged that members of the Tiprasa Civil Society attacked local businessmen for opposing the shutdown. “The Ministry of Home Affairs is responsible for the deportation of illegal immigrants. Why were officials and businesspeople targeted in the name of protesting illegal migrants? Why were innocent traders’ homes and shops vandalized?” he questioned.

State BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee and Congress leader and former minister Sudip Roy Barman also visited the hospital to check on the injured.

CPI-M State Secretary and Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, senior minister Ratan Lal Nath, former Chief Minister and BJP MP Biplab Kumar Deb, along with other political leaders, condemned the violence.

The ruling BJP's ally, the Tipra Motha Party (TMP)Ranjit Debbarma, initiated a 24-hour statewide shutdown on Thursday in support of an eight-point demand charter.

These demands include the deportation of illegal migrants, the introduction of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) to prevent infiltration, and the enforcement of the tripartite agreement signed between the Centre, the Tripura government, and the TMP on March 2 last year.

According to police reports, protesters carrying national flags conducted sit-in demonstrations at over 52 key locations and along highways statewide, including several spots near railway tracks in West Tripura and Khowai districts on Thursday.

After signing the tripartite agreement, the then opposition TMP, which includes 13 MLAs, joined the BJP-led coalition government on March 7, 2024, altering the political landscape of Tripura.

Two TMP MLAs — Animesh Debbarma and Brishaketu Debbarma — were later appointed to the Manik Saha Cabinet.

Under the leadership of Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, the TMP had also staged a demonstration in Delhi on September 9 to advocate for its demands.

Since 2021, the TMP has governed the 30-member Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), which encompasses nearly two-thirds of the state's area of 10,491 sq km and is home to over 12.16 lakh people, approximately 84 percent of whom are tribals.

Point of View

The rise of political tensions and violence highlights the fragility of peace in the region. The response from the government reflects a commitment to law and order, but the challenge remains in addressing the underlying issues that fuel such unrest. We must advocate for dialogue and resolution to prevent further escalations.
