DMK to Stage Statewide Protests in Tamil Nadu Over Amit Shah's Comments on Ambedkar

Chennai, Dec 19 (NationPress) The ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu has declared plans for statewide protests on Thursday, condemning Union Home Minister Amit Shah for what they allege to be an insult to Dr B.R. Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Indian Constitution. Leaders from the DMK, which is part of the INDIA bloc, announced that these protests will be held across the entire state.
Earlier, Chief Minister and DMK President M.K. Stalin criticized the BJP—without directly naming Amit Shah—asserting that those who truly care for the nation and its populace would recognize Dr Ambedkar’s immense contributions.
Stalin also raised concerns regarding the silence of Opposition leader and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) on this matter.
In a statement shared on his social media late Wednesday night, CM Stalin accused EPS of neglecting the issue, insinuating that he is eager to rekindle electoral relations with the BJP.
Renowned Tamil actor Vijay, who recently founded the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party, also denounced Amit Shah’s comments about Dr Ambedkar. In a social media update on Wednesday, Vijay expressed his indignation, implying that some individuals seem to be “allergic” to Dr Ambedkar’s name.
Vijay lauded Dr Ambedkar as an “unmatched political and intellectual figure” who represents freedom and justice for all citizens of India.
He highlighted Dr Ambedkar’s lasting legacy as a source of hope for marginalized communities and as a symbol of resistance against social injustice. “Ambedkar… Ambedkar… Ambedkar… Let us continue to chant his name with joy in our hearts,” Vijay proclaimed.
Importantly, Vijay had previously recognized Dr Ambedkar as one of the ideological inspirations for the TVK during his party’s inaugural rally in Vikravandi, located in northern Tamil Nadu.
This area, noted for its substantial Dalit population, serves as a stronghold for Thol. Thirumavalavan’s Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), previously known as the Dalit Panthers of India.
Vijay’s newly established party seems to be targeting Dalit voters, capitalizing on his popularity within marginalized communities—stemming from the socially conscious roles he has portrayed in his film career.
As per the 2011 Census, Dalits make up approximately 20 percent of Tamil Nadu’s population. Activists believe this number may have increased by around 6 percent in recent years.
