Telangana Congress Leaders Protest at Ambedkar Statue in Assembly

Hyderabad, Dec 19 (NationPress) Leaders from the ruling Congress party in Telangana orchestrated a sit-in at the Ambedkar statue located within the premises of the Legislature on Thursday. They demanded the removal of Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his disgraceful statements concerning Babasaheb Ambedkar.

Holding portraits of Ambedkar and chanting slogans, the Congress members, including several ministers, demonstrated at the statue situated at the Assembly building.

The protest was spearheaded by Mahesh Kumar Goud, the Telangana President of the party and a member of the Legislative Council. The leaders insisted that Amit Shah should apologize for his comments regarding Dr. B. R. Ambedkar.

Congress MLAs and MLCs took part in this protest, marking the first action by the ruling party following the controversy stirred by Amit Shah's remarks.

In addition, Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar called for Amit Shah's removal from the Union Cabinet due to his statements. He also urged that the BJP leader be prosecuted under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The minister challenged Central ministers G. Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay to clarify their positions on Amit Shah’s comments about Dr. Ambedkar. Prabhakar questioned the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS)'s silence in response to BJP's disrespect toward the architect of the Indian Constitution.

Previously, BRS Working President K.T. Rama Rao denounced Amit Shah's remarks as 'shameful'.

The Union Home Minister had made these remarks during a debate commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Constitution. In a subsequent post on X, Rama Rao criticized the Congress for what he termed its double standards concerning Ambedkar. He noted that Congress leaders in Delhi express admiration for Ambedkar for political advantage, yet in Hyderabad, they dishonor the esteemed leader by restricting public access to the 125-foot statue of Ambedkar and disregarding his birth and death anniversaries.

The statue was erected near the State Secretariat in Hyderabad by the former BRS administration.
