Maharashtra Opposition Protests Union Home Minister Shah’s Comments on Dr. BR Ambedkar

Nagpur, Dec 19 (NationPress) The Opposition in Maharashtra staged a raucous protest at the entrance of the Vidhan Bhavan on Thursday against Union Home Minister Amit Shah for allegedly disrespecting Dr. BR Ambedkar.
Opposition legislators paid tribute to Ambedkar at Constitution Chowk before marching to Vidhan Bhavan, where they chanted slogans like “Jai Bhim, Jai Bhim” and “Ambedkar, Ambedkar.”
The Opposition expressed outrage over Shah's remarks made on Tuesday in the Rajya Sabha, suggesting that Congress leaders would have found favor in heaven had they praised God instead of following the “trend of repeating Ambedkar’s name.”
Aaditya Thackeray, a legislator from Shiv Sena (UBT), launched a vehement criticism against Shah, claiming that his comments not only insulted Ambedkar but also the Constitution and the citizens of India.
“Will Ramdas Athawale, N Chandrababu Naidu, and Nitish Kumar continue their association with the BJP in light of this? They should clarify their positions. Will the numerous legislators who profess to support Ambedkar now resign?” he questioned. He further urged these MahaYuti legislators to step down.
Aaditya asserted that Shah’s statement reflects the BJP’s hostility towards the Constitution.
“It is unlikely that BJP MLAs and Amit Shah will offer an apology,” he remarked, adding that a nationwide protest is being organized in response to Shah’s comments.
Vishwajeet Kadam, a Congress legislator, stated that any insult to Dr. BR Ambedkar would not be tolerated.
Previously, Shah claimed that his statements were misinterpreted while accusing the Congress of being anti-Ambedkar and anti-Constitution.
The Opposition showcased their strength at Vidhan Bhavan at a time when the MahaYuti legislators, including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, were gathered for a group photograph.
In response, the MahaYuti legislators shouted slogans like ‘Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Ki Jai’ and ‘Babasaheb Ambedkar Yana Pranam.’
Earlier, Uddhav Thackeray, the chief of Shiv Sena (UBT), condemned Amit Shah’s comments, insisting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should either take disciplinary action against the Home Minister or resign.
