Chennai, June 15 (NationPress) BJP Tamil Nadu state president and legislature party leader Nainar Nagendran has vehemently criticized the DMK government for relocating a vital flood control initiative in the Nagapattinam district. He claims this decision jeopardizes the safety and livelihoods of countless farmers while favoring private interests linked to the ruling party.
In his statement, Nagendran remarked: “In 2017, during the AIADMK administration, a budget of Rs 49.50 lakh was approved for the construction of a flood control barrier (Kadaimadai Anai) across the Vettaru river at Uthamacholapuram to avert seawater encroachment. The site was selected following thorough consultation and technical evaluation. However, the DMK government has irresponsibly relocated the project 2 km to the west, putting agricultural lands and local drinking water sources at risk.”
“The new location was not chosen based on any scientific or environmental criteria,” he emphasized.
“It seems to have been selected merely for the benefit of a few, including relatives of DMK district secretary K. Gautham, who possess land in the vicinity. Is this administration serving the public or just its party members?”
Nagendran raised alarms that the new site could lead to saline groundwater, impacting irrigation and drinking water for over 32 villages in Nagapattinam and Keezhvelur revenue divisions.
“Numerous petitions, protests, and appeals to officials have gone unanswered. This is not merely administrative negligence—it is a betrayal,” he asserted.
Targeting Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, he continued: “The Chief Minister proudly states ‘Naanum Deltakkaran thaan’ (I too am a son of the Delta), yet when the farmers of Nagapattinam seek assistance, he chooses to remain silent. Why?”
Nagendran called on the Chief Minister to promptly cease construction at the contested site and ensure that the flood barrier is erected at the initially sanctioned location.
“This is not simply a matter of development—it’s about safeguarding the health, livelihood, and future of Delta farmers,” he concluded.
