Kolkata, July 17 (NationPress) Asia’s oldest football tournament, the Durand Cup, is gearing up to commence on July 23 with a remarkable increase in prize money, new venues, and a broader international participation. Nonetheless, as the tournament prepares for another exciting season, its lead-up has been overshadowed by ongoing uncertainties in Indian club football — especially concerning the Indian Super League (ISL).
The Durand Cup Organising Committee announced that only six ISL clubs — Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, Mohammedan Sporting, Jamshedpur FC, Punjab FC, and the defending champions NorthEast United FC — will participate this year, a significant reduction from 12 last season.
This decrease is due to a standoff between Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) and the All India Football Federation (AIFF) regarding the renewal of the Master Rights Agreement, leaving the ISL’s 2025–26 season in limbo. This situation has caused hesitation among clubs about organizing their squads, training regimens, and off-season commitments, including participation in the Durand Cup.
Describing the circumstances as “unprecedented,” Lt Gen Mohit Malhotra, Chief of Staff at Headquarters Eastern Command and Chairman of the Durand Cup Organising Committee, acknowledged the crisis but refrained from assigning blame.
“It’s all evident,” he stated. “While it’s not our place to comment, we are confident that both parties are dedicated to the advancement of Indian football and hope for a swift resolution.”
Regarding the Durand Cup, Lt Gen Malhotra highlighted a substantial rise in prize money — from under ₹1.2 crore last year to ₹3 crore this season. Additionally, individual standout players, including the Best Goalkeeper, Golden Boot winner, and Golden Ball winner, will be awarded SUVs.
The champion team will also be honored at Rashtrapati Bhavan, receiving the President’s Cup from the President of India, a tradition that emphasizes the event’s enduring legacy in Indian sports.
This year will also witness a significant geographical expansion, as the Durand Cup will take place in Manipur for the first time. The Khuman Lampak Main Stadium in Imphal will host Group F matches, enhancing the sport’s visibility in the Northeast — a region with rich football heritage.
Despite ongoing tensions in Manipur, security concerns were addressed. Lt Gen Malhotra provided reassurances: “The atmosphere is vibrant — we witnessed that during the trophy unveiling. I assure you that all necessary precautions are in place in Manipur to ensure the tournament proceeds safely.”
He also acknowledged the backing of local heroes. “We have garnered immense support from local icons like Thoiba Singh, Mirabai Chanu, and seven members of the Indian football team. We are optimistic about a successful event there.”
Kolkata will once again host the Durand Cup, featuring 15 matches, including crucial Group A and B matches, a quarter-final, a semi-final, and the final on August 23. The tournament opener — East Bengal vs South United FC — is set to take place at Salt Lake Stadium, with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee scheduled to inaugurate the month-long event.
State Sports Minister Arup Biswas highlighted the tournament’s revitalization: “It has regained its former glory over the past few years. This marks the sixth time it is being hosted in Kolkata.”
This year’s Kolkata lineup will feature four clubs, including newly-promoted I-League side Diamond Harbour FC.
In response to media reports alleging discontent among city clubs regarding complimentary tickets, Lt Gen Malhotra clarified: “These reports are inaccurate. According to a signed agreement, each club will receive 5,200 complimentary passes.”
Despite a reduced ISL presence, the tournament has increased its international aspect. This year, two foreign teams — Tribhuwan Army FC (Nepal) and Armed Forces (Malaysia) — will compete, up from one last year. This reflects a continued effort to blend local tradition with an international flair.
