Kolkata, Oct 15 (NationPress) The father of the Durgapur gang-rape victim has called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the tragic incident.
In a conversation with members of the press, he expressed his belief that a central agency probe would ensure exemplary punishment for those responsible.
"I have consistently insisted on stringent punishment for the offenders. While the police investigation has shown some progress, I still harbor doubts. A CBI investigation would likely lead to a more thorough examination of the case and facilitate swift justice for the victim," stated the father.
This demand follows the National Commission for Women (NCW)'s recent fact-finding report concerning the Durgapur case, which highlighted serious security lapses and significant negligence by the West Bengal Police during the investigation.
The NCW's report, made public on Tuesday, pointed out, “It was noted that the police had failed to secure the crime scene as of October 12, which raises the risk of evidence tampering. Additionally, no proper forensic examination took place at the site. Such procedural errors reflect grave negligence by the local investigative authorities.”
On Tuesday, Sunil Choudhary, Commissioner of Police for Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate, assured that the victim's father is receiving all necessary support. He stated that the investigation is progressing positively.
So far, six individuals have been detained, including Wasif Ali, the male companion of the victim who was with her that night. Ali is scheduled to appear in court later today, as police seek custody based on inconsistencies in his statements during questioning.
Last Friday, a second-year medical student from Odisha was gang-raped by five men in a wooded area near a private medical college and hospital in Durgapur, West Burdwan district. Following the victim's complaint, the police arrested five suspects, who are currently in custody.
