Rahul Gandhi's Humorous Remark on PM Modi Amid Women's Reservation Discussion
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 17 (NationPress) In a playful jab at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, stated on Friday that neither he nor the Prime Minister face any "wife issues." This comment elicited laughter from the Members of Parliament during the ongoing Budget session.
Gandhi's remark was made amid a debate in the Lok Sabha, following Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal's introduction of the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill and the Delimitation Bill, 2026.
Additionally, Union Home Minister Amit Shah presented the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026.
He remarked, "Women represent a vital force in shaping our national vision and outlook. Each individual present here has been influenced and learned immensely from the women in their lives."
Continuing his humorous tone, he said, "As (Kiren) Rijiju noted, neither the Prime Minister nor I have wife issues, so we lack that input, but we certainly have our mothers and sisters."
This comment followed Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju’s reference to Law Minister Meghwal, who had recited a poem for his wife during discussions on the Women's Reservation Bill.
Rijiju humorously added, "We were reprimanded yesterday for the fact that if the Law Minister can compose a poem for his wife, why can't the rest of you? I certainly faced some backlash for that yesterday."
In praise of his sister, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, LoP Rahul Gandhi mentioned, "Yesterday, I witnessed my sister accomplish in five minutes what I have struggled to achieve in 20 years of my political journey."
As laughter erupted again among the MPs, Gandhi pointed out that the achievement was to "bring a smile to Union Home Minister Amit Shah's face."
Concerning the three contentious Bills under discussion, Rahul Gandhi accused the government of "advancing its agenda" using the Women's Reservation Bill as a facade, asserting that it was unrelated to women's empowerment.
"This is not a Women's Reservation Bill; it is a maneuver to alter India's electoral landscape under the pretense of advocating for women's rights. The Women's Reservation Bill was approved in 2023. Revert to the original Bill, and we will back it," the Leader of Opposition stated.
