Residents reported to the media that they managed to apprehend two of the suspects late Tuesday night.
The suspects are accused of assaulting a 60-year-old woman while she was at home alone during the night. Following the crime, locals pursued the fleeing perpetrators and successfully caught two, handing them over to the authorities.
Local police officials have stated that they are actively working to locate the third suspect.
The assailants reportedly entered the victim's property with the intention of stealing chickens from her poultry coop. When the woman awoke to the noise and confronted the intruders, they overpowered her and committed the assault after dragging her into a different room.
Subsequently, the villagers pursued the attackers and managed to detain two of them.
After physically confronting the captured suspects, the villagers turned them over to the police the following morning. On Thursday, the suspects were brought before a sub-divisional court in the South 24 Parganas district.
According to the victim's statement to local law enforcement, she was home alone while her husband was hospitalized for an eye surgery.
She also mentioned that the assailants were armed with a homemade pistol and a sharp weapon, which they used to intimidate her during the assault.
Since last year, West Bengal has frequently made national headlines due to numerous horrifying incidents of rapes and murders, many involving minors.
One of the most notable cases was that of a junior doctor at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, who was raped and murdered within the hospital premises in August of the previous year.
