Agartala, Jan 4 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Tripura Assembly and member of the CPI-M Politburo, Jitendra Chaudhury, has on Sunday called for a government job to be granted to a member of the family of Angel Chakma, who was ruthlessly attacked in Dehradun and ultimately lost his life due to his injuries.

Chaudhury, who also serves as the state secretary of CPI(M), visited Chakma’s home in Machmara, located in Unakoti district of Tripura, on Saturday. He expressed strong disapproval of the Uttarakhand Police for their inadequate management of the case, highlighting significant delays in filing the case and apprehending those responsible.

The LoP pointed out that the murder case was registered by the Uttarakhand Police quite late and that their investigative efforts were alarmingly slow.

Initially, the Dehradun Police categorized the incident under less severe legal provisions, even though Angel Chakma was severely stabbed and assaulted by a group who allegedly used racial slurs during the attack.

Referring to statements from Angel’s father, Tarun Prasad Chakma, a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan, the Left leader noted that the 24-year-old MBA final-year student might have survived if he had received prompt and adequate medical care.

Chaudhury urged the Tripura government to engage with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to facilitate a government job for a member of Angel Chakma’s family.

Meanwhile, the Dehradun Police have arrested five suspects associated with the murder.

The Uttarakhand government has provided an ex gratia of Rs 4.12 lakh to the grieving family, while the Tripura government has offered an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh. Additionally, the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) has granted Rs 3 lakh to the family.

Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA final-year student, was reportedly attacked by a racially motivated mob in the capital of Uttarakhand on December 9. He succumbed to his injuries on December 26 after struggling for his life in a hospital for 18 days.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage across all eight Northeastern states, with leaders from nearly all political parties, including the BJP, Congress, Tipra Motha Party, and Left factions, demanding severe punishment for those involved in this heinous act.

Numerous organizations have organized candlelight vigils, torch rallies, and other forms of protest in Agartala and various locations to denounce the murder.

In related developments, senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader from Uttarakhand and former Rajya Sabha member Tarun Vijay, who met with Chakma’s family in Unakoti district on Friday, has also called for the harshest penalties for the perpetrators.

Condemning the crime, Vijay asserted that exemplary punishment must be meted out to the offenders to deter similar acts in the future.

He mentioned that Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has had multiple discussions with his Uttarakhand counterpart, Pushkar Singh Dhami, regarding the investigation.

Vijay also proposed that Angel Chakma’s younger brother, Michael Chakma, be given a government job in Tripura to ensure the family’s financial security.

He further recommended establishing a special Northeast division within the Uttarakhand Police to address issues of racial discrimination and abuse.
