Washington, Dec 12 (NationPress) As Diwali earned its place on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the Consulate General of India in Houston, USA, hosted a lively event to commemorate this significant milestone.
This joyous occasion was organized in partnership with BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir and various Indo-American community organizations in Houston.
During the event, Indian Consul General D.C. Manjunath emphasized the worldwide importance of this recognition and the universal message of light, harmony, and goodwill that Diwali embodies.
“The festivities featured a lamp-lighting ceremony, cultural showcases, and an enchanting light show, with enthusiastic involvement from community members and local officials,” the Consulate General of India in Houston shared on X on Friday.
In a show of solidarity, the Indian Consulate General in Atlanta was also illuminated, with diyas lit to honor the cultural recognition.
A total of 67 nominations from around 80 countries, including India's Diwali, were evaluated during a week-long key session of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, which commenced at Delhi's Red Fort on Monday.
Numerous Indian diplomatic missions globally joined in the celebrations, acknowledging this worldwide recognition of one of India's most cherished cultural and spiritual festivities.
In Lebanon, the Indian Embassy in Beirut arranged a series of vibrant cultural performances to celebrate.
Indian Ambassador to Lebanon, Noor Rahman Sheikh, along with his wife, participated in lighting diyas to commemorate this special occasion with the local community.
Earlier on Thursday, the Indian Embassy in Chile hosted an event at the Santiago Hindu Temple, adorned with diyas, vibrant lights, devotional prayers, and worship of various Hindu deities, symbolizing the universal theme of light over darkness and harmony over division.
