New Delhi, Oct 6 (NationPress) In a strong condemnation of the incident where an object was hurled at the Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai during Supreme Court proceedings, Congress MP Imran Masood described this event as a “dark day in the nation’s history.”

In a statement to IANS, Masood expressed, “This day will be written in black letters in the history of the country. It is a dark day for India. Throwing a shoe at the Chief Justice of India in the Supreme Court, is this not an act of madness? What kind of hatred is being cultivated in this country? We have been saying repeatedly that hatred is being spread against Dalits and Muslims. Has it come to the point where the nation cannot tolerate even a Dalit Chief Justice?”

He further emphasized, “Sanatan Dharma is a religion of love, not hate. The Constitution grants every citizen the freedom to practice their religion. No one is insulting any faith, but the hatred being spread is dangerous. Prime Minister Modi must wake up to this reality before the situation gets out of control. Not accepting a Dalit CJI, nothing could be more unfortunate.”

Earlier that day, CJI B.R. Gavai reportedly decided against taking action against a man dressed as a lawyer who attempted to disrupt the court session by allegedly trying to throw an object at the bench led by CJI Gavai.

The individual was seen approaching the dais and attempting to remove his shoe, but court security swiftly intervened and escorted him out.

As he was being removed, he was heard chanting slogans related to Sanatan Dharma.

Despite the brief interruption, CJI Gavai maintained his composure and continued with the proceedings without pause, stating, “Don't get distracted by all this. We are not distracted. These things do not affect me.”

Later, it was confirmed that CJI Gavai had suggested ignoring the incident and not pursuing any further action against the individual involved.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA) unanimously passed a resolution expressing their “deep anguish and disapproval” regarding the actions of the alleged advocate, who made an “unwarranted and intemperate gesture” aimed at disrespecting the CJI Gavai-led Bench.

The SCAORA characterized the conduct as “unbecoming of a member of the Bar,” stating it undermines the mutual respect vital to the relationship between the Bench and the Bar.

The resolution further declared that such behavior is “antithetical to the dignity of the legal profession and contrary to the constitutional values of decorum, discipline, and institutional integrity.”

Additionally, any attempt to malign or personalize gestures against sitting judges of the Supreme Court constitutes “a direct assault on the independence of the judiciary and undermines public faith in the justice delivery system.”

Point of View

It's crucial to recognize the broader implications for our democracy and judicial independence. The attack on CJI Gavai, labeled by Imran Masood as a dark day, signifies a troubling trend toward intolerance in our society. We must reaffirm our commitment to protecting the values that uphold our constitutional framework, ensuring that respect for the judiciary remains paramount in our national discourse.
