What Are the Positive Expectations Surrounding the India-EU Trade Agreement?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
At the United Nations on January 30, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed optimism regarding the recent free trade agreement between India and the European Union, noting it has the potential to enhance global multi-polarity.
On Tuesday, India and the EU unveiled this free trade agreement, which EU President Ursula von der Leyen hailed as the “mother of all trade deals”.
During his annual press briefing outlining his objectives for the year, Guterres underscored the necessity for multipolarity, particularly at a time when global power dynamics are dominated by two major players: the United States and China.
“Global challenges cannot be addressed by a single power dictating terms. Nor can they be resolved by two powers dividing the world into competitive spheres of influence,” he stated.
He emphasized that “to achieve a stable world where peace is sustained and development is distributed fairly, we must promote multi-polarity.”
“It is crucial to enhance, with intention and resolve, a multipolar framework that is interconnected, inclusive by design, and capable of fostering equilibrium through partnerships in trade, technology, and international collaboration,” he added.
“We must foster a network of relations among diverse nations. I am seeing a lot of positive expectations in recent trade agreements, such as those involving the EU with Mercosur, Indonesia, and India, among others,” he remarked.
Through these networks of international cooperation among an increasingly broad array of countries and entities, we can cultivate “a genuine multi-polar world” where the principles of the United Nations Charter can thrive,” he concluded.
