Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 12 (NationPress) Several parliamentarians expressed their welcome to US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Thursday, extending congratulations for the recently revealed India-US interim trade agreement. They emphasized that this development marks a crucial advancement in reinforcing bilateral relations.
Member of Parliament and former Foreign Secretary Harsh V. Shringla shared images of the meeting on X, depicting the envoy’s reception at an event adorned with the flags of India and the United States. The assembly included discussions on the specifics and potential impact of the trade deal.
The interim agreement, announced via a joint statement on February 6, comes after negotiations that began in 2025. It is perceived as a precursor to a more comprehensive Bilateral Trade Agreement that is currently under negotiation.
As per the details disclosed earlier, the United States will reduce reciprocal tariffs on select Indian products from 50% to 18%, with provisions for further tariff reductions in key sectors, including pharmaceuticals, gems and jewelry, and aircraft components once the comprehensive agreement is finalized.
In exchange, India is anticipated to decrease duties on specific US industrial goods and agricultural products, which include tree nuts, fruits, soybean oil, wine, and spirits.
India has also signaled its intent to procure over $500 billion worth of US goods over the next five years, targeting sectors such as energy, technology, coal, and aircraft. Such purchases could markedly enhance American exports to India.
The agreement reportedly encompasses US concessions concerning penalties related to India’s imports of Russian oil, contingent on specified conditions.
US President Donald Trump labeled the pact as “historic,” highlighting the mutual benefits and improved market access for American goods in India’s vast market of 1.4 billion people.
Although some updates to official fact sheets have raised questions about agricultural provisions, Indian officials have asserted that there is a mutual understanding between both parties. The formal agreement is expected to be finalized by March.
