PM Modi: Indian Railways Revolutionizes Safety Standards
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 16 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday emphasized that Indian Railways has experienced a significant transformation, establishing new standards through ongoing reforms and advanced technology.
In this vein, he shared an article authored by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, detailing how the safety framework of Indian Railways has evolved over the last decade through coherent policies, the introduction of modern technology, and a steady influx of funding.
The Prime Minister’s Office conveyed on X: “The Indian Railway ecosystem has witnessed a transformative shift, and the outcomes are evident. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw illustrates how this sector is creating new standards through enduring reforms and technology.”
For numerous passengers, traveling by rail is not merely a choice; it is a necessity. In a system that manages immense volumes over extensive distances, safety transcends technical metrics—it embodies public trust, it noted.
The article underscores that during PM Modi’s initial term, a decisive message was communicated: “Safety First” for Indian Railways. In pursuit of this objective, the organization has embraced a technology-driven, consistently funded overhaul of its safety infrastructure.
As a result, the rate of train accidents has significantly declined across the nation. In 2014-15, Indian Railways recorded 135 accidents, plummeting to just 16 in 2025-26—a remarkable reduction of 89 percent. This downturn in accidents occurred alongside an increase in train operations and passenger numbers.
During this timeframe, the consequential accident index, which gauges accidents per unit of train running distance, has decreased from 0.11 to 0.01, reflecting a substantially safer system for every kilometer traveled.
Moreover, in 2014-15, rail accidents claimed 292 lives; however, by 2025-26, only 16 lives were lost in the 16 accidents reported.
Highlighting the critical role of Indian Railways in the daily lives of citizens, the minister stated: “Every morning, as India awakens, its railways are already operational. Over two crore passengers board the nation’s trains each day, including office workers, students, migrant laborers, families, and soldiers.”
