New Delhi, Jan 17 (NationPress) More than 100,000 people have signed up for India's chip design training initiatives, with approximately 67,000 individuals already having completed their training, according to a government announcement on Saturday.
This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), is designed to empower India to achieve self-sufficiency in chip design—an essential industry for contemporary electronics, renewable energy, defense, and innovative technologies.
The government stated, “Over 100,000 individuals have enrolled in chip design training, with around 67,000 trained to date.”
The Chips to Start-up (C2S) Programme, introduced in 2022 with a total budget of Rs 250 crore, is at the heart of this initiative.
This program encompasses nearly 400 organizations, including 305 educational institutions and 95 startups, with the goal of training thousands of students, researchers, and engineers throughout India.
To date, students and institutions have submitted over 75 patents and are working on more than 500 IP cores, Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs), and System-on-Chip (SoC) designs across various sectors, including telecommunications, automotive, defense, and consumer electronics.
The C2S Programme also fosters start-up incubation, technology transfers, and research publications, aiming to create industry-ready professionals across B.Tech, M.Tech, and PhD levels.
It has equipped B.Tech students with VLSI-focused coursework and involved PhD scholars in advanced research in chip design, while allowing M.Tech graduates to specialize in VLSI, embedded systems, and related fields.
As per MeitY, this extensive program not only enhances India’s talent pool in semiconductors but also fortifies domestic technological capabilities, supporting the nation’s ambition to compete globally in chip design.
By uniting academic institutions, start-ups, research bodies, and industry partners, the government is crafting a robust ecosystem where innovation, practical education, and research flourish together.
