Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 16 (NationPress) The presence of pivotal stakeholders at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, which commenced here on Monday, reflects India's advancing leadership in the artificial intelligence sector, according to an expert.
The India AI Impact Summit 2026 has created significant buzz both domestically and internationally.
Shashi Shekhar Vempati, the former CEO of Prasar Bharati, characterized the summit as a moment of pride for India.
"The participation of global leaders, industry pioneers, startups, budding innovators, and researchers indicates India’s enhancing leadership in the AI domain," he stated.
Vempati noted that under the stewardship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has become a prominent voice for the Global South.
He emphasized that the period in which only a few nations could monopolize technological advancements while others lagged is coming to an end.
"The globe is keenly observing what unfolds at this summit," Vempati told IANS.
He compared India’s recent ascent as a significant global hub for internet services to its current trajectory toward becoming a key player in the AI field.
Just as India swiftly adapted to vaccines during the Covid-19 pandemic while many nations hesitated, it is now embracing AI as an opportunity rather than a threat.
Vempati highlighted India’s advantages, such as being the world’s largest democracy, having a vast English-speaking populace, extensive mobile and internet access, and a robust digital services ecosystem.
He also referenced a Stanford University report that underscores the rapid pace of AI adoption in India.
Vempati urged that India must concentrate on developing its own AI models and applications instead of solely relying on foreign platforms.
"The AI Impact Summit will act as a crucial platform for Indian startups, emerging talent, and investors, propelling the nation towards becoming a leading force in the global AI arena," he added.
In an interview with IANS during the summit, Takumi Miyakawa, Deputy Director at Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), remarked that Japan’s new administration is also prioritizing AI.
"The Japanese Prime Minister has underscored the strategic significance of AI, and the government is actively aiding domestic firms in developing AI models," he mentioned.
Miyakawa expressed optimism about enhancing collaboration between India and Japan in the AI sector, with discussions already in progress to bolster bilateral partnerships.
