Intense Snowfall in Higher Elevations of J&K, Moderate Precipitation in Lowlands

Srinagar, Jan 6 (NationPress) Intense snowfall was recorded in the higher elevations, while moderate snow and rain affected the lowlands of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday.
According to officials from the Meteorological (MeT) department, significant snowfall was observed in Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, and various other high-altitude areas of J&K within the last 24 hours.
A statement from the MeT office indicated, “On January 6, generally overcast conditions with light to moderate rain (in the plains of Jammu)/snow at most locations in J&K are expected. Conditions are anticipated to improve starting January 6 afternoon. On January 7 and 10, generally cloudy conditions with dry weather are expected. On January 11 and 12, cloudy weather with light snow in isolated to scattered locations is likely. January 13 and 15 are expected to be generally dry.”
The weather department has also released an advisory, cautioning that due to fresh snowfall, sub-zero temperatures and icy conditions on roads (both in the plains and higher elevations), tourists, travelers, and transport operators should plan their journeys accordingly. It is also recommended for the public to adhere to administrative and traffic advisories.
The recorded minimum temperatures were: Srinagar at minus 0.5, Gulmarg at minus 4.5, and Pahalgam at minus 1.4 degrees Celsius.
In the lowlands, Jammu city recorded 9.3, Katra town 9.2, Batote 2.8, Banihal 2.3, and Bhaderwah 3.6 degrees Celsius as the lowest temperature during the night.
The current 40-day span of extreme winter conditions commenced on December 21 and is set to conclude on January 30.
At this time, all water bodies, including lakes, springs, ponds, streams, and wells, are partially frozen.
Medical professionals have urged individuals to take precautions and avoid prolonged exposure to cold temperatures. Those in high-risk age categories, particularly children and the elderly, are especially advised to minimize their exposure to cold. Hypothermia, combined with respiratory infections, is a leading cause of heart attacks and heart failure globally.
The recent snowfall has delighted numerous tourists currently enjoying their vacation in Gulmarg and other hill stations. Lodgings in Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and most areas in Srinagar are completely booked during this period.
