Iran Appeals to UN for Condemnation of Assault on Its Embassy in Damascus

Tehran, Dec 10 (NationPress) Iran's Ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Seyed Irvani, has called upon the UN Security Council and the UN Secretary-General to denounce the recent assault on Iranian diplomatic and consular missions in Syria, according to the official IRNA reported on Tuesday.

In a formal letter, Irvani requested actions to guarantee the safety of diplomats and to avert future attacks, as reported by Xinhua news agency quoting Iran's official news outlet IRNA.

Irvani pointed out that the attack breached the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, both of which ensure the inviolability of diplomatic premises and the safeguarding of diplomatic personnel.

He stressed that such breaches must not be accepted, asserting that no person, organization, or nation holds the right to execute or aid such actions. Irvani urged the UN chief and the Security Council to take prompt measures to maintain the security of diplomatic missions and personnel.

On Sunday, Iranian state television reported that Iran's embassy in Damascus was attacked by Syrian militant forces following the downfall of President Bashar al-Assad's government. The spokesperson for Iran's foreign ministry, Esmaeil Baghaei, confirmed that Iranian diplomats had evacuated prior to the assault.
