Iran and Syria in Diplomatic Talks to Restore Embassy Operations

Tehran, Dec 24 (NationPress) Iranian government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani stated on Tuesday that Iran and Syria are actively involved in diplomatic discussions concerning the reopening of their embassies located in Damascus and Tehran.

During a weekly press conference held in the capital, Mohajerani remarked, "We are conducting diplomatic consultations to restore the embassies of both nations." This statement was reported by the semi-official Tasnim news agency.

She emphasized that Iran is adopting a diplomatic strategy towards the reopening of the embassies in both capitals, noting that both nations are prepared for this step.

Mohajerani highlighted the importance of establishing a Syrian government that reflects the will of its people and maintaining the territorial integrity of the Arab nation.

Furthermore, she underscored the necessity of preventing the escalation and spread of terrorism to protect Syria and its neighboring countries, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

On December 17, Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei indicated that the reopening of the Iranian embassy in Syria is a priority on the agenda.

He mentioned that certain prerequisites must be fulfilled for the embassy's reopening, including ensuring the safety of the diplomatic mission and its personnel, emphasizing, "Once the required security and political conditions are established, Iran will reopen its embassy."

A militant coalition led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group launched a significant military campaign from northern Syria on November 27, advancing southward, seizing the capital Damascus, and toppling former president Bashar al-Assad's administration within a span of 12 days.

On December 8, Syrian militant factions breached Iran's embassy in Damascus, which had already been evacuated prior to the assault.

The following day, Iran expressed its belief that the Syrian populace should exclusively determine their future without any external interference or imposition.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry stated, "The responsibility for shaping Syria's future and making decisions about its destiny lies solely with the Syrian people, without any harmful external meddling or imposition." This declaration followed the collapse of Bashar al-Assad's regime.

Additionally, it was noted that to achieve this goal, it is crucial to halt military conflicts in the nation promptly, avert terrorist activities, and initiate national dialogues that incorporate all segments of Syrian society to establish a comprehensive government representing the entire Syrian populace.
