Washington, April 21 (NationPress) US Vice-President JD Vance, along with his wife Usha Vance and their three children, departed from Italy to India. They are expected to touch down on Monday morning for a four-day itinerary that features a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Air Force 2 is set to arrive in New Delhi at 9:30 a.m. The Vance family will also visit Agra and Jaipur. Accompanying them are their three children—Ewan, age 7, Vivek, age 4, and Mirabel, age 2. Usha Vance’s family has roots in Andhra Pradesh, although it remains unclear if they will be meeting any relatives during their time in India.
This trip marks the Vice-President's inaugural visit to India, coinciding with ongoing discussions between the two nations regarding a potential trade agreement, prompted by former President Donald Trump's extensive tariffs on imports into the United States. Presently, the tariff on India is set at a baseline of 10 percent for all trading partners, excluding China, during a temporary 90-day suspension of the original levies.
The Vice-President is slated to meet with the Prime Minister, marking their second bilateral discussion. Their first meeting occurred in February during the AI summit in Paris. Following that, the Prime Minister traveled to Washington DC for his initial discussion with the American President after returning to the White House.
Vance becomes the second high-ranking official from the Trump administration to visit India this term.
The initial visit was made by Tulsi Gabbard, the director of national intelligence, who traveled to India in March. During her visit, she met with the Prime Minister and other officials, in addition to addressing the Raisina Dialogue, an annual conference focused on national security and foreign policy.
Vance's visit is particularly significant as he is the first American Vice-President to set foot in India in 13 years. The last to do so was Joe Biden, who visited during his tenure as Vice-President under Barack Obama in 2013. His predecessors, Mike Pence and Kamala Harris, did not make similar trips.
