Washington, April 16 (NationPress) US Vice-President J.D. Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, who has Indian roots, are set to visit Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur as part of their forthcoming trip to India, as announced by the White House on Wednesday.
The Vice President plans to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi while in Delhi next week.
This marks Vance's inaugural visit to India and is significant as it is the first by a US Vice President in 13 years, with the last being Joe Biden in 2013, during his term as Vice President under Barack Obama.
India is the second nation on the Vances' tour, which runs from Friday until April 24, with Italy being their initial destination.
'During their time in India, the Vice President will explore New Delhi, Jaipur, and Agra,' a statement from Vance's office indicated. 'He will engage in discussions with Prime Minister Modi and partake in activities at significant cultural sites,' it further mentioned.
There was no reference to Mike Waltz, the National Security Advisor, in the White House's announcement, leaving unclear when he might visit India. His upcoming trip, when confirmed, will mark the third visit by a senior member of the Trump administration to India, following Tulsi Gabbard, the Director of National Intelligence, and Vice-President Vance.
Vance previously met PM Modi in Paris during the AI summit in February, where the Second Lady and their two sons were also present. The recent announcement did not clarify whether the Vances would bring their children along on this trip.
As a prominent figure in the Trump cabinet, Vance has been a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump's initiatives. He is frequently consulted for comments during public meetings with visiting international leaders, with one of his notable contributions being during the meeting with Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky.
Usha Vance’s parents emigrated to the US from Andhra Pradesh, and she was born in San Diego. Her birth name is Usha Bala Chilukuri.
Interestingly, Vance's predecessor, Vice-President Kamal Harris, did not visit India during her time in office, even though she shares Indian ancestry, as her mother’s family is from Tamil Nadu. Mike Pence, who served as Vice-President during Trump's first term, also expressed interest in visiting India but was unable to make it.
