Bengaluru, March 31 (NationPress) The Karnataka government has announced the establishment of South India’s inaugural Government Organ Transplant and Retrieval Centre in Bengaluru, as revealed by Sharan Prakash Patil, the Minister for Medical Education, Skill Development and Livelihood, on Monday.
The minister further elaborated that plans are underway to build a helipad at Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru to facilitate efficient organ transportation, with Rs 1 crore allocated for the development and establishment of the facility.
In a bid to enhance existing capabilities and to set up the organ retrieval centre, the government has approved Rs 1 crore, with an official order already dispatched.
This initiative is significant as it coincides with the 125th anniversary of Victoria Hospital, marking a notable milestone, he added.
According to Minister Patil, the organ retrieval centre is anticipated to commence operations within the next four to six months.
The centre will be instrumental in optimizing organ procurement processes for transplants, the minister stated.
“Operating as a specialized unit for collecting organs from deceased donors, the centre will offer comprehensive services, which include ICU facilities, an operation theater, a laboratory, and advanced diagnostic features.
Victoria Hospital, which already houses a trauma and emergency care centre, the Institute of Gastroenterology and Urology Transplantation, the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology at Minto Hospital, and a Skin Bank, is among the largest medical institutions in South India. The addition of this organ retrieval centre will significantly enhance its capabilities,” Minister Patil remarked.
For successful organ donation, it is essential to identify potential donors, guarantee safe procedures, conduct family counselling, provide advanced ICU care, and comply with legal regulations.
Therefore, sufficient funding has been earmarked for the complete development of the centre.
This initiative holds great importance and will serve economically-challenged patients, highlighted Minister Patil.
Dr. Deepak, Medical Superintendent of Victoria Hospital, stated, “The establishment of an integrated organ retrieval centre at Victoria Hospital will help enhance the organ donation programme, benefiting underprivileged patients.”
Additionally, to ensure seamless organ transport, a helipad is being constructed at Victoria Hospital.
The Victoria Hospital extends its services to the economically weaker sections of society.
