Kolkata, July 8 (NationPress) The West Bengal Junior Doctors' Front, a coalition of various junior doctors' associations in the state, is set to host a “reclaim the night program” at midnight on Tuesday to commemorate the first anniversary of the tragic R.G. Kar case involving rape and murder that occurred last August.
Nevertheless, the office bearers of the West Bengal Junior Doctors' Front have stated that they will not join the upcoming “March to State Secretariat” rally organized by the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, which, while intended to be apolitical, is still tied to the same issue.
The parents of the victim, a junior doctor, have agreed to participate in the rally led by LoP Adhikari.
The body of the deceased doctor was found on the morning of August 9 last year in a seminar room at the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in north Kolkata.
In an evening press briefing, representatives from the West Bengal Junior Doctors' Front announced that the “reclaim the night” event will take place from midnight Tuesday until 4 a.m. on Wednesday.
“We will march through the streets all night and will organize a torch rally,” stated Debasish Halder, a prominent figure in the R.G. Kar movement.
On August 9, a convention titled “Cry of the Hour” will be held at the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital.
“We will voice our concerns regarding the prevailing culture of fear in educational institutions across West Bengal at this convention,” Halder added.
When questioned about their absence from the “March to State Secretariat” rally on August 9, Halder explained that despite the LoP's assertion of a non-political rally, it appeared likely to adopt a political tone.
“We believe that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) shares responsibility with the state government in this matter. The CBI has yet to provide any supplementary charge sheet. The LoP cannot absolve responsibility for the inadequate investigation by the central agency,” remarked another office bearer from the West Bengal Junior Doctors' Front.
