Kolkata, April 5 (NationPress) The Kolkata Police apprehended a man on Saturday who was part of an inter-state scheme responsible for the production of counterfeit birth certificates in Bihar. These fake documents were subsequently utilized in West Bengal to secure fraudulent Indian passports for illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.

Investigators from the Security Control Organisation (SCO) of the Kolkata Police detained Azad Alam in the morning in the Garden Reach area, located on the southern fringe of Kolkata.

Alam had submitted a passport application, providing a birth certificate generated in Bihar as a necessary document, which turned out to be counterfeit, according to police reports.

Authorities are currently interrogating Alam regarding the agents who facilitated the acquisition of the fake birth certificate from Bihar, an official stated.

He has identified a resident of Bihar who allegedly served as an ‘agent’ in aiding him to obtain the forged birth certificate.

The city police plan to reach out to their counterparts in Bihar and may dispatch a team to the neighboring state for further investigation if required.

Sources familiar with the case indicated that this marks the first recorded instance of a fake birth certificate from Bihar being utilized in a passport application within Bengal.

Recently, Kolkata Police initiated a crackdown on networks involved in producing fake Indian identity documents, including passports, for illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators. Several individuals, including a retired sub-inspector of the Kolkata Police, have been apprehended in relation to this case.

Discussing the operational methods of such gangs, an investigator revealed that an illegal infiltrator who contacts local agents and expresses a willingness to pay significant sums for obtaining fake Indian identity documents is first offered safe accommodation in villages adjacent to the Bangladesh border.

Subsequently, agents procure fake birth certificates and ration cards for these individuals. These documents are then utilized to create fake voter ID cards or EPIC, PAN, Aadhaar cards, and passports.
