Kasargod, Oct 6 (NationPress) The controversial mime performance regarding the Gaza conflict at Kerala's Kumbla Higher Secondary School took place on Monday, successfully overcoming significant protests from local BJP activists.
The performance, which was initially suspended on Friday during the school's two-day Kalolsavam (arts festival), had ignited widespread controversy throughout Kerala.
On Friday, a group of higher secondary students performed a mime illustrating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, highlighting the death of a child amid Israeli bombardments.
Using a soft toy and a portrait of a grieving Palestinian mother as props, the students showcased solidarity with Palestine through posters and flags.
The performance was abruptly interrupted when a teacher pulled down the curtain, which led to other students chanting slogans of “Free, free Palestine.” Following this, the teacher declared the cancellation of that day’s events.
This curtain incident incited protests from student organizations, including the Muslim Students Federation (MSF) and the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), creating a tense atmosphere.
Upon learning about the events of Friday, Kerala Education Minister V. Sivankutty ordered an immediate inquiry, tasking the Director of Public Instruction to compile a report.
Sivankutty remarked that Kerala has always stood against the violence perpetrated by Israel in Palestine, stating, “Kerala stands with the children being targeted in Palestine.” He assured that students would be allowed to perform the mime again.
On Monday, the performance proceeded despite ongoing protests from local BJP members outside the school, demonstrating the administration’s commitment to safeguarding student expression and solidarity with Palestine.
“It’s peculiar that the BJP raises issues leading to an uproar, yet remains silent when others overstep boundaries. Freedom of expression seems selective,” conveyed a local BJP leader during the protest.
This incident has reignited political tensions in Kerala surrounding expressions of solidarity with Palestine.
