Patna, March 6 (NationPress) In a significant event for the Janata Dal-United (JD-U), Umesh Singh Kushwaha, the MLA representing Mahnar in Vaishali district, has been re-elected as the Bihar unit President for the third time in a row.

Kushwaha submitted his nomination on Friday and was elected unopposed, as no other candidates put forward their nominations.

The official declaration of his election took place at 4 p.m.

He filed his nomination before state election officials Ashok Kumar "Munna" and Paramhans Kumar.

Prominent JD-U leaders attended the nomination process, including Bihar Minister Leshi Singh, former Minister and MLA Ratnesh Sada, former Minister and MLA Sheela Mandal, and Poonam Sinha.

Additionally, notable figures such as Minister of State Ramnath Thakur, Minister Shravan Kumar, and Bihar Legislative Council chief whip Sanjay Kumar Singh were also present.

Having led the JD-U organization in Bihar for the past five years, Umesh Singh Kushwaha is regarded as a close ally of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

He first took over as State JD-U President in 2021, succeeding Vashishtha Narain Singh, and has remained in this leadership role since then.

The JD-U has historically relied on the "Lav-Kush" social coalition, which encompasses the Kurmi and Koeri communities.

As a member of the Koeri community, Kushwaha is seen as a key figure in reinforcing the "Kush" aspect of this political alliance and maintaining the party's ties with its traditional voter base.

Even after the exit of significant Koeri leaders like Upendra Kushwaha from the JD-U, Umesh Singh Kushwaha has remained steadfastly supportive of Nitish Kumar, consolidating his influence within the party hierarchy.

He won the Mahnar Assembly seat in both 2015 and 2025, although he faced defeat in the Bihar Assembly election of 2020.

Notwithstanding this setback, Nitish Kumar has continued to trust Kushwaha, assigning him the critical task of overseeing the party’s organization in the state.

Kushwaha’s re-election as State JD-U President is particularly timely, as Bihar's political environment is currently undergoing rapid changes following Nitish Kumar's announcement of his candidacy for the Rajya Sabha.
