Time to confront forces undermining constitutional values Ambedkar’s vision for equality remains relevant Critical to uphold social justice in India Challenges in honoring great leaders persist Government priorities questioned by opposition

Mumbai, Dec 6 (NationPress) The Maharashtra Congress president, Harshwardhan Sapkal, stated on Saturday that it is time to confront the forces undermining and opposing the constitutional values and to reinforce our commitment to shaping the India envisioned by the Constitution.

“The Constitution, bestowed upon the nation by Babasaheb Ambedkar, the primary architect of India’s Constitution, continues to serve as a guiding light for the country. However, there are emerging forces that are challenging these constitutional principles. It is essential to combat these forces and to renew our commitment to the India that the Constitution envisions,” Sapkal expressed while addressing the media after honoring the Bharat Ratna BR Ambedkar during the Mahaparinirvan Diwas at Chaityabhoomi.

He further emphasized that slavery and exploitation are deep-rooted blemishes on social systems worldwide.

“Among the distinguished leaders who dismantled these chains and advocated for social justice, equality, and brotherhood, Babasaheb Ambedkar remains a towering figure,” he remarked.

He noted that Ambedkar fought tirelessly for the marginalized, oppressed, and exploited, planting the seeds of equality in society—values he enshrined in the Indian Constitution.

Regarding the increasing calls to rename a Metro station in honor of Babasaheb Ambedkar, Sapkal commented that typically, only the names of industrialists who contribute to the government through electoral bonds are honored with such naming rights, as evidenced by stations like Siddhivinayak, Mahalaxmi, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus.

“While the demand is valid, it seems improbable that the BJP government will concede. Locations linked to the legacy of great individuals should bear their names, yet the BJP is advancing its own agenda. Even the push to name the Navi Mumbai airport after local hero D B Patil is met with resistance, opting instead for NM Airport—Narendra Modi Airport,” he commented.

On the subject of the delay regarding the Indu Mill Memorial for Ambedkar, Sapkal accused the BJP government of favoring projects that promise substantial profits.

“The Samruddhi Highway and Shaktipeeth Highway illustrate this trend. The latter is being expedited to benefit a specific industrialist with access to mining in Central India. The memorials for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the Arabian Sea and for Babasaheb Ambedkar at Indu Mill are being intentionally delayed. The BJP stands against our great leaders. How many of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' promises have been fulfilled? Why should anyone put faith in his commitments regarding the Indu Mill memorial?” he questioned.

Point of View

Harshwardhan Sapkal’s statements reflect a growing concern over the erosion of constitutional values in India. This call to action underscores the importance of safeguarding democracy and equality, principles that resonate deeply within the fabric of our society. As the nation navigates political challenges, it is vital to remain committed to the ideals set forth by our founding leaders.
