Maharashtra Government to Permanently Revoke Licenses of Orchestra Bars Operating Illegally as Dance Bars

Key Takeaways
Mumbai, February 24 (NationPress) - The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, has taken a decisive stance against the abuse of orchestra bar licenses that enable the operation of unauthorized dance bars. He announced that the government is set to introduce a provision for the permanent cancellation of licenses for these establishments, especially those that continue to defy regulations despite prior actions taken against them.
The government aims to reinforce the Maharashtra Prohibition of Obscene Dance in Hotels, Restaurants, and Bar Rooms and Protection of Dignity of Women (Working Therein) Act of 2016, with amendments planned for the upcoming Budget or Monsoon Sessions of the Assembly.
Fadnavis emphasized a zero tolerance policy towards the illegal operations of these bars, focusing on the elimination of legal loopholes that have permitted orchestra bars to act as de facto dance bars.
Under the new proposal, the government seeks to permanently revoke licenses for bars engaged in obscene dance or those that have made unauthorized modifications to their premises, rather than simply issuing temporary suspensions.
Despite the Supreme Court's previous ruling that struck down mandatory CCTV installations in performance areas due to privacy issues, the state insists on strict compliance with regulations concerning hall sizes, podium distances, and operating hours, as well as a ban on the showering of currency notes (with tips to be included in the bill).
This announcement from the Chief Minister came during the Question Hour in the state assembly, where various members, including Shiv Sena (UBT) representative Bhaskar Jadhav, raised concerns regarding the bars operating along the Panvel highway.
In response, Fadnavis indicated that the police would reinvestigate these Panvel bars. Yogesh Kadam, the Minister of State for Home (Urban), reported that in the Masal tehsil of Pune, there are no dance bars, only orchestra bars, and noted that the police have filed charges against three orchestra bars for rule violations.
Additionally, an orchestra bar in South Solapur has seen charges levied against 71 individuals, including women and patrons, for contravening regulations. The authorities have seized ₹56 lakh, and investigations are ongoing.
