Will the Maha Government Construct a High-Speed Freight Corridor Linking Vadhavan Port and Samruddhi Marg?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Nagpur, Dec 10 (NationPress) Maharashtra Minister Dadaji Bhuse announced in the Assembly on Wednesday that the state cabinet has sanctioned the development of a 104.9-km high-speed freight corridor designed to establish a direct link between the forthcoming Vadhavan Port and the Samruddhi Mahamarg (Hindu Hruday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg).
The cabinet has also approved the design and land acquisition for this vital freight corridor.
In response to queries from Shiv Sena (UBT) legislator Mahesh Sawant and others, the Minister mentioned that a loan would be procured from HUDCO to facilitate land acquisition.
He elaborated that a thorough evaluation will be conducted to determine project costs after the detailed project report is received.
Minister Bhuse clarified that the 104.9 km high-speed freight corridor will connect Vadhavan Port in Palghar district to the Samruddhi Expressway at Bharvir in Nashik district.
Vadhavan is being developed as a significant transhipment hub under the Centre's Sagarmala initiative and is expected to become one of the nation's leading ports. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will oversee the project's execution, anticipated to be completed within three years.
The Minister further noted that the expressway will traverse through Dahanu, Vikramgad, Jawhar, and Mokhada talukas of Palghar district, as well as Trimbakeshwar and Igatpuri talukas of Nashik district.
This corridor will dramatically shorten the distance between the port and the expressway from approximately 183 km to just 105 km, thereby reducing freight travel time from the current 4-5 hours to merely 1-1.5 hours.
“This is a vital strategic connection to facilitate the anticipated surge in international cargo from Vadhavan Port, a prominent transhipment hub under the Centre's Sagarmala initiative,” stated the Minister.
He pointed out that the high-speed link will enhance the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of goods movement, supporting the industrial and agricultural sectors in Vidarbha, Marathwada, and North Maharashtra by providing a direct route to the Western coast.
