Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Oct 8 (NationPress) During a significant meeting regarding the special intensive revision (SIR) exercise in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her doubts about the feasibility of commencing the SIR after October 15, given that October is filled with festivals in the state. "Can we realistically initiate the SIR amidst the celebrations this month? Will the Election Commission of India (ECI) act under the influence of the BJP? Or will it uphold the democratic rights of the citizens?" she queried.
She further criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah, alleging that the developments surrounding the SIR are orchestrated under his directives. "This is his strategy. He behaves like an acting Prime Minister. I urge the Prime Minister not to take his word at face value," the Chief Minister remarked.
In response to her remarks, Sukanta Majumdar, Union Minister of State for Education and former BJP state president in West Bengal, claimed that the Chief Minister's fears stem from the possibility that the SIR could lead to the removal of illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya migrants from the state’s voter list. "She is acting like a Mir Jafar to the Bengali Hindus. Her aim is to transform West Bengal into another Bangladesh," Majumdar stated.
The Chief Minister also launched a fierce critique of the central government, asserting that the current administration represents the most authoritarian regime in Indian history. "I've witnessed various Union governments, but I've never encountered such conceit and authoritarianism. They hold power today, but nothing is eternal," she concluded.
