Shillong, February 23 (NationPress) - On Monday, Meghalaya's Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma, unveiled the State Budget for the fiscal year 2026–27, with a projected fiscal deficit of Rs 2,672 crore, equivalent to 3.5% of the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP).
During his presentation in the state Assembly, Chief Minister Sangma, who also oversees the Finance department, emphasized that the government has effectively kept the fiscal deficit within the allowable threshold, showcasing a commitment to fiscal discipline while continuously focusing on development.
"I am pleased to announce that we have successfully maintained the fiscal deficit within the allowable limit of 3.5%,” stated the Chief Minister in his budget address, highlighting that sound financial management has facilitated a balance between economic growth and social responsibilities.
The aims of the 2026–27 Budget include fortifying Meghalaya's economic framework, fostering inclusive growth, and ensuring focused investment in vital sectors such as climate resilience, youth empowerment, gender equality, and sustainable development.
Alongside the main budget document, Chief Minister Sangma introduced various thematic budgets, emphasizing the state government's commitment to outcome-oriented and sector-specific planning.
"The Climate Budget for 2026–27 has been set at Rs 5,572 crore, reflecting a 2.8% increase from the previous fiscal year,” he noted.
He explained that this increased allocation demonstrates the state government's ongoing dedication to climate action, environmental sustainability, and resilience initiatives, particularly given Meghalaya's delicate ecological balance.
Additionally, the Youth Budget has been earmarked at Rs 4,824 crore, which represents a considerable 45% increase compared to 2025–26, aimed at enhancing opportunities in education, skill development, entrepreneurship, and job creation for the youth.
Moreover, the Gender Budget is allocated at Rs 6,849 crore, a 10% increase from the previous year, underscoring the government’s commitment to women-centric programs, gender equity, and social empowerment.
Lastly, Chief Minister Sangma reaffirmed the government's alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with targeted investments designed to promote long-term, inclusive, and sustainable growth for Meghalaya.
