Agartala/Kohima, Feb 19 (NationPress) A High-Level Committee (HLC) led by Union Home Minister Amit Shah approved an allocation of approximately ₹460 crore for the northeastern states of Nagaland and Tripura to address crises resulting from last year's devastating floods, as confirmed by an official.

An official statement revealed that the HLC, under the leadership of the Home Minister, sanctioned a total of ₹1,554.99 crore in additional Central assistance to five states: Andhra Pradesh (₹608.08 crore), Telangana (₹231.75 crore), Odisha (₹255.24 crore), Nagaland (₹170.99 crore), and Tripura (₹288.93 crore).

This extra funding is in addition to the resources already provided by the Centre to these states through the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).

The Central Government swiftly dispatched Inter-Ministerial Central Teams (IMCTs) to the affected states right after the disasters, without waiting for a formal memorandum.

During August-September of the previous year, severe floods and landslides caused by heavy rainfall wreaked havoc across several northeastern states, leading to numerous casualties and substantial property and crop destruction.

In Nagaland, six individuals lost their lives and many were injured due to a series of landslides and mudslides that occurred on September 3.

According to Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, the catastrophic floods in August last year impacted approximately 1.7 million people, with around 400,000 individuals relocated to safe shelters and 889 relief camps established by the government.

At least 38 lives were lost due to the floods and landslides, and a total of 58,687 houses were damaged. The floods inflicted damages estimated at around ₹15,000 crore, the Chief Minister stated.

The approval for the additional funding of ₹288.93 crore was granted following a meeting between the Tripura Chief Minister and the Union Home Minister in Delhi on February 15, where they discussed the extensive damage caused by the floods and the necessary relief measures for the affected citizens.

Expressing his appreciation, the Chief Minister stated that the additional Central assistance of ₹288.93 crore has been sanctioned for Tripura in light of the severe landslides and floods that struck the state last August.

"This additional Central assistance will undoubtedly be a blessing for the people affected by the disaster in the state. The ₹288.93 crore allocated to Tripura will significantly aid the state in achieving developmental objectives that were hindered due to the Tripura Floods 2024. I sincerely thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi and HM Amit Shah for their unwavering support to Tripura," CM Saha expressed on Facebook.

As per the official announcement from the Ministry of Home Affairs, during the financial year 2024-25, the Central government has allocated ₹18,322.80 crore to 27 states through the SDRF, and ₹4,808.30 crore from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) to 18 states, along with ₹2,208.55 crore from the State Disaster Mitigation Fund (SDMF) to 14 states and ₹719.72 crore from the National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF) to eight states.
