Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 24 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a conversation with US President Donald Trump on Tuesday, reaffirming India's commitment to immediate de-escalation and peace restoration in the midst of the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
During their discussion, PM Modi underscored the significance of keeping the strategic Strait of Hormuz open, secure, and accessible for global stability. The two leaders agreed to maintain communication regarding peace and stability efforts.
"I received a call from President Trump and we had a productive exchange regarding the situation in West Asia. India advocates for prompt de-escalation and peace. Ensuring the Strait of Hormuz remains open and secure is critical for the entire world. We consented to stay connected on peace and stability initiatives," PM Modi shared on X.
This dialogue occurs amid the escalating conflict that began following the strikes executed by the United States and Israel on Iran on February 28, which resulted in the death of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Iran launched drone and missile strikes targeting US and Israeli facilities, regional capitals, and allied forces in the area.
The ongoing conflict has intensified pressure on global markets, with energy prices remaining volatile due to developments in the region.
The political partnership between President Trump and PM Modi has been prominent over the years, marked by large public events and diplomatic interactions.
The two leaders have consistently praised each other, highlighting their collaboration in sectors such as trade, defense, and strategic partnerships between the United States and India.
Last November, Trump expressed intentions to visit India this year, aligning with a planned US Presidential visit related to the Quad Summit.
The Quad, comprising India, the US, Japan, and Australia, has emerged as a vital platform for strategic coordination in the Indo-Pacific region.
On Monday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also discussed the West Asia crisis via phone, reviewing its implications for the global economy and energy supplies. They agreed to continue their collaborative efforts.
"I had an extensive teleconference this evening with Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Our discussions were centered on the West Asia conflict and its ramifications for the global economy, particularly focusing on energy security concerns. We agreed to maintain communication," EAM Jaishankar posted on X.
According to a readout from the US State Department, Secretary Rubio and EAM Jaishankar concurred on the necessity of ongoing cooperation to advance mutual objectives.
"Secretary Rubio spoke today with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar," stated Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott. "The two officials addressed the current circumstances in the Middle East, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration to achieve shared priorities," he added.
