Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 25 (NationPress) - Following a telephonic discussion between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump on Tuesday, which addressed the current situation in West Asia and highlighted the necessity of keeping the Strait of Hormuz accessible, the BJP expressed its view on Wednesday, labeling this dialogue a 'constructive action' and expressing optimism for a swift return to peace.
Opposition leaders have urged for the conversation's details to be disclosed in Parliament.
Union Minister Ramdas Athawale conveyed to IANS his belief that the discussion between the two leaders centered around the ongoing conflict and the urgent need to reduce tensions. He observed signs that the warfare might soon be halted.
“Prime Minister Modi has consistently aimed to promote peace and avert warfare. The current conflict has triggered global issues, including hikes in diesel and petrol prices, inflicting losses worldwide. India’s stance is unequivocal — the war must cease,” Athawale remarked.
He further added that the dialogue between Modi and Trump represents a positive development.
“A resolution is essential. President Trump’s communication with Prime Minister Modi is a commendable step, and we can expect peace soon,” he told IANS.
BJP MP Shashank Mani Tripathi also expressed hope, indicating that there is potential for a pause in the ongoing conflict. He noted that Prime Minister Modi has been proactive in engaging with leaders from West Asia to explore avenues for peace.
“Prime Minister Modi has reached out to various heads of state in the Middle East to ascertain how India can effectively contribute to peace initiatives and leverage its influence positively,” Tripathi stated.
On the other hand, opposition parties have challenged the government’s approach, calling for increased transparency.
Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav emphasized that nations like Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey are already assuming mediating roles, and India should adopt a more assertive stance.
“As the world’s largest democracy, India could have assumed a crucial mediating role. The Prime Minister’s strong ties with global leaders could have added weight to his intervention. The specifics of his conversation with President Trump should be shared with both Parliament and the public,” Yadav remarked.
Sanjay Raut, MP from Shiv Sena (UBT), criticized the situation, stating, “If President Trump had grasped the nuances of diplomacy, the escalation to war could have been avoided. The United States seems to be encountering setbacks, necessitating an urgent response.”
The discussion between the two leaders transpired amid rising tensions in West Asia, following the strikes by the US and Israel on Iran on February 28.
These strikes reportedly resulted in the demise of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Iran executed drone and missile strikes targeting US and Israeli installations, allied forces, and regional capitals, exacerbating the conflict across the region.
