New Delhi, March 24 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump on Tuesday, addressing the evolving circumstances in West Asia and underscoring the significance of maintaining an open Strait of Hormuz.
According to US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, on X, "President Donald Trump just spoke with Prime Minister Modi. They discussed the ongoing situation in the Middle East, including the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open."
This dialogue occurs against the backdrop of a persistent conflict in West Asia, which escalated following the strikes on February 28 by the United States and Israel targeting Iran, leading to the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Iran initiated drone and missile assaults on US and Israeli installations, as well as regional capitals and allied forces.
The ongoing strife has exerted pressure on global markets, with energy prices remaining highly sensitive to developments in this region.
Over the years, President Trump and PM Modi have cultivated a notable political alliance, characterized by prominent public events and diplomatic interactions.
The two leaders have often expressed mutual admiration, highlighting cooperation in various domains including trade, defense, and strategic initiatives between the United States and India.
Last November, Trump indicated his intent to visit India this year, coinciding with the anticipated US Presidential visit connected to the Quad Summit.
The Quad grouping, comprising India, the US, Japan, and Australia, serves as a pivotal platform for strategic coordination in the Indo-Pacific region.
On Monday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone conversation regarding the West Asia crisis, assessing its implications for the global economy and energy supplies. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to collaborative efforts.
"Had a detailed telecon this evening with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Our discussions focused on the West Asia conflict and its impact on the international economy. We particularly spoke about energy security concerns. Agreed to remain in touch," EAM Jaishankar posted on X.
The US State Department released a statement indicating that Secretary Rubio and EAM Jaishankar concurred on the necessity of ongoing collaboration to advance their shared objectives.
“Secretary Rubio spoke today with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar,” said Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott. “The two officials discussed the current situation in the Middle East,” he added, emphasizing the importance of continuing their cooperative approach to mutual priorities.
