Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 2 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi articulated his worries regarding the escalating situation in West Asia and affirmed that India will persist in collaborating with all nations in the region to guarantee the safety and security of its citizens.
He emphasized that New Delhi advocates for peace and stability.
During a joint press conference with Canadian PM Mark Carney, PM Modi remarked, "India's position on the various ongoing global tensions is resolute. We have consistently called for the maintenance of peace and stability, and when two democracies unite, the call for peace becomes even more potent."
On the security issues within the Gulf nations, he stated, "The current circumstances in West Asia are a matter of significant concern for us. India endorses the resolution of all conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy. To ensure the safety of all Indian nationals, we will continue to collaborate closely with all countries in the region."
These comments arise amidst a worsening conflict in the Middle East that ignited following joint US-Israel airstrikes on Iran, aimed at crippling Tehran's missile capabilities and broader military infrastructure.
The initial phase of the operation reportedly resulted in the deaths of high-ranking figures in the Iranian leadership, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, provoking a powerful response from Tehran through drone and missile strikes targeting US assets, regional capitals, and allied forces across the Gulf.
Iran's counterattacks have reached multiple countries, with missiles and drones intercepted over Kuwait, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates, leading to temporary airspace closures and causing both military and civilian casualties.
The escalating confrontation has prompted US forces to initiate counterstrikes, including naval operations, marking a significant and sustained confrontation between Washington and Tehran in recent decades.
Earlier on Sunday, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by PM Modi, was briefed on the airstrikes in Iran on February 28 and the subsequent escalation in the Middle East, as well as the security of Indian citizens in the region.
As per the official statement, the Committee was updated regarding the airstrikes in Iran on February 28 and the ensuing escalation, which included assaults in several Gulf nations.
"It expressed serious concern over the safety and security of the large Indian expatriate community in the region," the statement concluded.
